RIVALRY: Married couple Pauline and Eddie Young faced off for the mixed singles championship at Greenbank Gardens Bowls Club on Sunday, June 9.

The championship was contested by about 11 players who were whittled down to Eddie and Pauline Young for the final game.

Both players were in good form throughout the day, but Eddie proved too good and built an insurmountable lead with a final score of 13-3.

The Young couple have been members of the club for the past 13 years.

Greenbank Gardens Bowls Club vice president Len Holden said it was unusual for a husband and wife to go head to head in a lawn bowls finals competition.

"Everybody was enthralled by the game and the outcome as you rarely see this pairing," he said.

"Eddie's strength is his placement of the balls which were closer to the jack than Pauline's were...that was the outcome of his slow and methodical approach.

"It was very competitive and Pauline wasn't giving him an inch...there was plenty of applause and no sledging."

Mr Young was presented with an inscribed plaque for his victory.

He said it was the third time he won the mixed singles championship.

"It was a repeat of last year's final...Pauline was out for revenge but I had the luck on the day," he said.

"When I played a couple of weeks (earlier) I was a load of rubbish."

The Greenbank Gardens Bowls Club will hold a mixed pairs competition and a barefoot bowls day later this year.
