WRIGHT MP Scott Buchholz has thrown his support behind the Baitul Masroor Mosque in the wake of the Christchurch terror attack.
Mr Buchholz visited the mosque on Thursday, March 21 to discuss Prime Minister Scott Morrison's $55 million announcement to boost security at places of worship.
Imam Wadood Janud said he appreciated the support, but could not accept the grant.
"We are a self-funded community," he said.
"Every penny of this mosque and every building is funded by local Australian Muslims."
Mr Buchholz said he was upset to learn that the mosque was targeted by a male driver who allegedly rammed his car into the mosque's gate and shouted abuse at members of the community.
"What is also sad about this case...is that these people are also proud to be in Australia," he said.
"They are proud that they have raised over $60,000 for the Red Shield Appeal. These people are active and invested in their community."
Mr Buchholz said it was time for the community to put aside differences and unite behind common values.
"I support the right of people to have a different opinion to mine. I support their right to free speech. But what I support more than both of these things is common decency," he said.
"The events in Christchurch last week were horrific and are indefensible. When children and men are gunned down in a place of worship, that's when we have to say enough.
"It was Gandhi who said: "An eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind."
