MORE than 1000 people have signed a petition pushing the state government to build a second road into Flagstone.
The petitioners are concerned that access only via Homestead Drive will result in congestion and could impact on people’s safety if there was a fire or flood.
Development in the suburb falls under the state government, with Economic Development Queensland responsible under the Greater Flagstone Priority Development Scheme.
Once fully developed, Flagstone is expected to accommodate about 120,000 people in 50,000 dwellings.
Flagstone resident Chris Spruce, who started the petition, demanded that money to build a thoroughfare off New Beith Road be released.
“Economic Development Queensland (should) let the funds go and come out and build this road,” he said.
“It will be safer for the community and it will help residents get to work.”
Mr Spruce said if Flagstone flooded, residents would be left stranded and the consequences could be more serious if a bushfire swept through.
He said there were about 6000 people living in the area and population was increasing with two new schools and two supermarkets to come.
He said residents worked in the suburbs like Springfield Lakes, Springfield and Browns Plains and would benefit from access to the west.
“The place is growing but the infrastructure is lagging,” Mr Spruce said.
Jordan MP Charis Mullen said there was a need for a second access road as the population grew.
She had met with residents, including Mr Spruce.
“I have raised their concerns about this important issue with the office of the Minister for Infrastructure and Planning,” Ms Mullen said.
A State Development Department spokeswoman said EDQ was working with developer PEET on further stages of development that included another access road.
A decision was expected before the middle of this year.
She said EDQ would work with Logan City Council and developers in the Greater Flagstone PDA on infrastructure requirements.
PEET had been required by EDQ during the development’s first stage to have a second access to Flagstone for emergency vehicles via New Beith Road.
“This condition was required by the 300th lot,” she said.
“The Greenbank Rural Fire Service has advised it can access the development via the unformed New Beith Road reserve with their 4x4 medium attack fire appliance.”
