A MASTERPLANNED community and park in Yarrabilba has won the Logan Urban Design Awards.
The Retreat and Buxton Park, built by Lendlease and designed by Tract Consultants, was recognised by the judges for its accessibility, planning, construction standard and the ‘clear excellence’ of its physical features.
It was one of several winners announced at Beenleigh Artisan Distillery on Wednesday.
Categories included masterplanning, landscape architecture and urban infrastructure, architecture and business programs and events.
Logan acting mayor Cherie Dalley said Logan City Council’s biennial awards recognised quality design and development.
“This is the third time we’ve held these awards and not only did we receive twice as many entries as 2016, the quality again was outstanding,” Cr Dalley said.
“As we grow we’re seeing more examples of outstanding urban design spring up around the city.
“That’s why we host these awards – to encourage high-quality, game-changing urban design practice and to recognise the projects that demonstrate great design principles.”
The awards were hosted at Beenleigh Artisan Distillery, the overall winner of the 2016 Logan Urban Design Awards.
Planning and economic development chair Cr Russell Lutton said the awards showcased the rich diversity on show in Logan.
“A focus on delivering good urban design outcomes can help attract business and private investment, provide diverse housing, work and lifestyle options, facilitate creativity and help create a strong sense of identity,” Cr Lutton said.
“Winners this year included Spirits of the Red Sands, a culturally immersive tourism attraction at Beenleigh Historical Village, developments such as Harvest Rise, Greenbank and high-quality residential buildings such as the Bernice Urban Apartments, Springwood.
“A promising sign of how strong the entries were this year is that so many projects were given commendations by the judges.”
The judges were Tract Consulting’s principal town planner Chris Buckley, Cardno senior consultant Allan Chenoweth and Queensland Government Architect Malcolm Middleton.
The 2018 Logan Urban Design Awards were sponsored by investLogan, Colin Biggers and Paisley Lawyers, Saunders Havill Group, RPS, LendLease, Queensland University of Technology and JMAC Constructions.
