JIMBOOMBA police officers came to the rescue of a young boy who went into anaphylactic shock last week.
Mother of four, Susie Reiser, from Kerry, near Beaudesert, was driving home from lunch on Camp Cable Road on Friday, October 5 when her son Josh, 14 complained of experiencing dizzyness.
Moments later Josh went into an uncontrollable fit, leaving Ms Reiser with two choices.
“Call an ambulance and not know how long I’d be waiting on the roadside with a car full of kids by myself, or keep driving and get him to Jimboomba Ambulance Station,” Ms Reiser said.
The family arrived at Johanna Street to find the station unattended and desperately rushed to the nearby Jimboomba Police Station.
Senior constables Matt Curling and Lee Urmston and acting Senior Sergeant Darren Ward immediately took steps to calm and stabilise Josh until paramedics arrived to take over.
Ms Resier said the heroic police officers treated the situation as seriously as they would if it was their own child’s life at stake.
“I didn’t know if they had kids but I got the impression they did. They stepped in and helped like it was their own kid,” she said.
“It was very scary. I have heard of other parents dealing with their child’s epileptic fits but did not know what was going on. I want to thank police because they went above and beyond to help Josh.”
Senior constable Curling said police were constantly exposed to situations which required immediate emergency action.
“Most of us are first-aid trained but that is not our main line of work so we do the best we can with the information and tools we have,” he said.
“We had some concerns, we did not know what was going on but we were able to comfort him and leave an open airway. We are very grateful young Josh has recovered and is looking good.
“We want to get the message out there to families in this situation that we are here to help and will do everything we can to help.”
Josh recovered after a couple of hours in hospital and is awaiting MRI scans to determine if there is a medical issue requiring attention.
The Reiser family visited Jimboomba police on Thursday, October 11 to thank officers for their actions and gifted them with chocolates.
