LOGAN Council is expected to reveal potential sewage treatment plant sites to service the Park Ridge to Yarrabilba development corridor in November.
Councillors Trevina Schwarz and Phil Pidgeon briefed the Logan Country Safe City group on the project during a meeting on Thursday, September 27.
Logan water committee chair Cr Pidgeon said three or four candidate sites would be released in November before a final decision was made.
“We have to meet our deadline, otherwise people are not going to be able to flush their toilets,” he said.
“It is reaching a critical point.”
The Site B sewage plant will ease pressure on the Loganholme plant, servicing Yarrabilba, Logan Village, Chambers Flat, Logan Reserve and Park Ridge.
Cr Pidgeon stressed the sewage treatment plant would be built to meet state of the art environmental standards.
It would not resemble the ageing Loganholme site.
“People have a view that it will be a smelly pond and we will use 1960s technology … time has moved on,” he said.
Cr Pidgeon said the site B plant would ideally be centrally located within the development corridor to minimise costs.
“It does not have to be located on the river, however, this would be preferable because wastewater discharges to the waterway,” he said.
“We have a unique opportunity with a whole heap of farms in the area located between the two big development footprints...we have been approached by a number of farms looking to take the wastewater.
“Council can not sell the wastewater, we have to give it away.”
Cr Pidgeon said strict environmental regulations would ensure treated water would be higher quality than the Logan River.
“They have to have a net positive benefit... I’m not a fan of discharging into the river, but it is a fact of life, that is what happens,” he said.
It is understood that more than 20 people have approached Logan Council to pitch their property as potential sites for the site B plant.
Logan Country Safe City chairman David Kenny said he was happy to see council putting forward a plan to deal with future growth.
Logan Council will receive a consultation report into the Park Ridge to Yarrabilba development corridor sewage plant next month.
