BEAUDESERT Hospital’s maternity ward has broken another record with the birth of baby Asa William Rooks on September 21.
Asa weighed in at 5.63 kilograms, not only beating the last birth heavyweight record by more than 200 grams but also representing the fourth generation of Rook boys born at Beauy Hospital.
Proud father, Woodhill carpenter Kristan Rook said he was happy his son had been born in Beaudesert.
“My grandfather was born here, my dad was born here and I was born here,” he said. “My mum was born here as well.”
New mum Rebecca said Asa was her firstborn so she did not have anything to compare size to but the nurses had said he was a big baby.
“He was a bit overdue so we came in on Friday to have my waters broken,” she said.
“We arrived at 7am and I was in labour from 10am until 8.33pm when he was born.”
Ms Rook said she had given birth naturally and the only worrying part was when Asa’s shoulder got stuck and he had to be helped into the world with a suction device.
“I’m still in shock that he was so big,” she said.
Mr Rooks said Asa’s birth was fantastic.
“It’s unreal, I can’t believe it,” he said.”It is a blessing that he has come out healthy, my wife did a great job and the midwives were awesome.”
Mr Rook’s business, Rookzy’s Fine Finishes, is a sponsor of the Jimboomba Redbacks AFL team and they had a tiny footy jersey made for him.
“It’s number 33, which is the number on my jersey,” Mr Rooks said.
Given the start to his life, it may be that the future Redbacks number 33 will take the field as a ruckman.
