ASTRONOMY lovers can catch a glimpse of moon craters, Saturn and a range of constellations at an International Observe the Moon Night event at Tamborine next month.
The Tamborine Village Lions club and Southern Astronomical Society will work together to organise the event for its sixth year at Woodstock, 231 Plunkett Road on October 20, from 6pm to 9pm.
Southern Astronomical Society treasurer Bryan Pott said there would be a variety of optical and electronic telescopes available to give sightseers a comprehensive moon viewing experience.
“I have been to an event where a 90-year-old man told me he had never seen the moon through a telescope before and it is incredible,” he said.
“We will probably see Saturn and catch a glimpse of Mars...we will see other constellations and look up and see our closest neighbour. The moon.”
Mr Pott said weather conditions could have an impact on the viewing experience.
“Even if it is a bit cloudy the moon won’t be a problem...it is so big that we will get onto it,” he said.
“Other stuff might be a bit restrictive...for five years we have never had an event stopped due to weather.”
People are asked to make a gold coin donation to attend the event where there will also be food and drinks available.
Funds raised from the moon gazing event will go towards the Tamborine Village Lion’s projects for the community and individuals in need.
People are encouraged to bring their own telescopes to avoid waiting in the queue.
