LOGAN City Council has identified 44 candidate roads that form a ‘statement of intent’ for the programming of the city’s future road and drainage works.
Roads and water chair Councillor Phil Pidgeon said what the SOI did was provide a plan that would give direction to the council when funds were allocated for roadworks.
“This is the priority list and the order that we want you to get it done in. A statement of intent is a clear public declaration of things to come,” Cr Pidgeon said.
The council has $5.9 billion dollars worth of roads, water and drainage infrastructure.
Cr Pidgeon said the city had 2053 km of sealed roads and 94km of unsealed roads, some well used and in good repair, others needing work.
He said the council spent $120 million a year on roads. Out of that, about $30 million would be spent on maintainence with that amount expected to increase as population and road use grew.
Cr Pidgeon said what the city needed was feeder and connector roads designed to bust congestion and improve driver safety.
Those that made the list included Loganlea, Goodna, Johnson, Park Ridge Road, Chambers Flat, Kenny, Waterford-Tamborine and Stockleigh roads.
The projects amount to about $1 billion in works expected to roll out over more than a decade ending about 2031 as funds become available.
They include a handful of ‘big’ projects like Park Ridge Road and School Road which would become a major east west connector road to Waterford Tamborine Road with four lanes of traffic and two of transit.
“No one knows what those transit roads will carry in the future,” Cr Pidgeon said.
“It could be buses, it could be light rail. Either way, it’s important for the future planning of the city to earmark those roads now. People need to know what they can anticipate and expect in the future. A lot of people are headed this way and what they need is surety.”
Cr Pidgeon said while the council lobbied State and Federal governments for road improvements like the six laning of Mt Lindesay Highway to Waterford Tamborine Road, it was important for the council to “stay on top of its own roads”.
“It’s no good the council lobbying the State and Federal government to improve their road networks if we can’t look after our own,” he said.
Cr Pidgeon said the statement of intent was important to the rural southwest, which will welcome populations the size of small cities to state government approved priority development areas which include Greater Flagstone, Yarrabilba and Park Ridge, Logan Reserve and Chambers Flat.
A report submitted by the road and infrastructure planning manager indicated the council had 11 separate SOIs relating to capital works and drainage programs.
The last updated in January, concentrated on the upgrades of major intersections, while the last for road capacity and safety in 2013, identified 15 projects. Six have been built or designed, one shared project with Brisbane City Council carried over to the new SOI while projects some projects are still progressing at New Beith Road, Chambers Flat Road and Edelsten Road.
The works would roll out out between 2021 and 2031 with some to come online in 2026.
The bulk of projects are in the divisions earmarked for future growth which are currently represented by councillors Pidgeon, Trevina Schwarz and Laurie Koranski.
A total of 28 of the candidate roads are external to but serve State government approved masterplanned developments and could qualify for funding as part of the State government’s draft Logan sub-regional infrastructure plan that is still to be approved.
