RECORD numbers are expected to sign on for the upcoming Jimboomba Little Athletics season over the next two weeks.
Returning athletes and new members have been invited to the Jimboomba Athletics Centre at Henderson Road on August 24 and 31 from 5.30pm to 7.30pm to sign up for the 2018-19 season.
The pre-season will begin in September ahead of the official start in October which runs until March, 2019.
Jimboomba Little Athletics Club secretary Peta Smith said the skills picked up in little athletics could be applied to a variety of sports.
“It is a foundation sport...a lot of people take what they learn there and transport it to other sports,” she said.
“We do running, sprinting, throwing, jumping and work on gross motor skills.
“We focus on personal improvement and help the kids improve their personal bests all the time by monitoring their progress.”
Ms Smith said people who were inexperienced or struggled to do well in sport were likely to find at least one area where they would excel.
“The great thing about little athletics is there are so many things to be good at,” she said.
“Some people do hurdles and find that is there thing or pick up a javelin and that is what they are good at.”
In 2017, the Jimboomba Little Athletics Club attracted 500 members.
Ms Smith said she only expected that number to grow for the 2018-19 season.
“We are expecting record numbers with huge growth in Yarrabilba and Flagstone. Lots of young families are moving into the area,” she said.
Jimboomba Little Athletics includes a one hour Tiny Tots program suitable for children aged three to four.
The club also includes an under 17 and under 20 group.
High profile under 20 Jimboomba athlete, Ashley Moloney competed at the World Under 20 Decathlon Championships at Finland in July and won gold.
Ms Smith said the club nominated Moloney for a Logan City Sports Award which will be announced later this year.
There will also be a free athletics clinic at Henderson Road on Sunday, August 26 with triple jump from 12pm, javelin throwing from 1pm and high jump from 2pm.
