CANUNGRA RSL Sub Branch held a memorial service on Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day and also took the opportunity to recognise veterans who served their country in all military operations, including Afghanistan.
The service was held at DJ Smith Park from 10.30am and was followed by lunch at the Canungra Services Club.
Canungra RSL Sub Branch president Col Lee said the service was conducted under blue skies and with 40 people in attendance including serving officers from Kokoda Barracks and council represented by councillors Nadia O’Carroll and Virginia West.

“Last year the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch decided to change the name of Vietnam Veterans Day to Vietnam and Veterans Day.
“This gave us the opportunity to include and recognise all veterans from Vietnam to Afghanistan and all those conflicts in between.
“This year we continued along this path and like last year mixed the older veterans with the younger ones.
“The day was once again most successful and had that feeling of comradeship, as we all bonded as one to remember those who we joined with, trained with, deployed with, but sadly did not come home with.”
A moving part of the service saw Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Campbell from Kokoda Barracks presenting local Vietnam veteran David Day with a unit citation for gallantry.
Mr Day fought at the Battle of Fire Support Patrol Base Balmoral in South Vietnam during May and June of 1968.
