POLICE and Ulysses Motorcycle Club members will rattle tins with 25 Emmaus College students at the Gold Coast this Saturday in support of sick babies at the Mater Hospital.
The congregation will complete three circuits from Southport Surf Life Saving Club to the Surfers Paradise club to walk 30 kilometres as part of a Mater Little Miracles fundraising campaign.
Ulyssess Motorbike Club members will be collecting funds from the top of Cavell Avenue, near McDonalds.
Grade 12 Emmaus College action captain Alissa Schuller approached Gold Coast Senior Sergeant Terry Armstrong in February to get the ball rolling on the initiative.
“I knew about this (fundraiser) when I was in grade nine and knew that once i reached grade 12 that I wanted to do it,” Ms Schuller said.
“When you are walking with your friends it doesn’t feel like you are giving back, so it is an easy way to fundraise.”
Senior Sergeant Armstrong has organised Mater Little Miracle fundraisers for the past 19 years with other police officers and family to raise a total of $450,000.
“It makes a big difference. We donate the money to premature babies at the Mater Hospital,” he said.
“If we help one baby then it is worth it.”
Senior Sergeant Armstrong said Ms Schuller took the lead to make the Gold Coast fundraiser possible.
“Alissa took it upon herself to approach us and she did all the hard work,” he said.
Emmaus College has been involved in fundraising campaigns in 2013 and 2015 when Senior Sergeant Armstrong’s daughters were in grade 12.
However, the 2018 cohort has pulled out all the stops to raise more money this year.
“This will be the biggest Emmaus walk by far. We have double (the numbers) we had in the past,” Senior Sergeant Armstrong said.
There will be a separate Logan District Mater Little Miracles walk will be held on August 11.
