THE Emmaus College rugby league team won five out of six games during the 2018 Confraternity Carnival at Charters Towers over the school holidays.
There were 48 teams competing in the carnival from July 2 to 6 across a number of divisions.
Emmaus competed in Pool A of division three and defeated Good Shepherd Mount Isa (18-6), Saint Johns Roma (30-6) and All Souls Charters Towers (30-6).
These wins secured the team a place in the semi-finals where Emmaus took on Trinity College.
Unfortunately, Emmaus College fell ten points short (12-22).
The Emmaus College boys rested on Wednesday, July 4 ahead of the minor placings games over the rest of the week.
Emmaus went on to win two more matches against Saint James Brisbane (36-18) on July 5 and Good Shepherd Roma (21-10) on Friday.
This effort helped Emmaus secure fifth place in division three.
Emmaus Confraternity head coach Jason Brechin said the boys trained for the competition since October 2017.
“The carnival which is in its 39th year celebrates persistence, sportsmanship and brotherhood and is not just a chance to play football, but is also seen as part of the formation and character building of the young men who are involved,” Mr Brechin said.
Emmaus College was singled out at the presentation ceremony to win the Spirit of the Carnival award out of 48 other schools.
Coaching assistant William Goss said this was a prestigious honour for the school.
“We were the one team chosen out of 48 who best showed qualities of sportsmanship, mateship and brotherhood both on and off the field,” Mr Goss said.
Mr Goss said it was a big week and thanked everyone who made the rugby league trip possible.
“Huge shout out to all the efforts of Jason Brechin and Jessie Deane. These two did an amazing job coaching and organising the trip for the boys,” Mr Goss said.
Emmaus College won the Men of League Challenge for the Confraternity competition last year.
