GREEN thumbs are celebrating Botanic Gardens Day with local volunteers hosting an open day at Tamborine Mountain.
Visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee and sausage sizzle while roaming through Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens on May 27 from 9am to 2pm.
There will be a hive of activity at the local gardens on Forsythia Drive with plants for sale and demonstrations by botanical artists, including chainsaw carver Matt Bird who made owls out of a tree trunk for the Sooty Owl Trail entrance.
Children can enjoy pot planting and painting with a Bunnings activity officer and walk the Sooty Owl Trail at the gardens.
Despite the venue being open every day, volunteer Bernadette Brushe said she encouraged people to join the garden volunteers on Botanic Gardens Day.
“People don’t realise that even though the council provides machinery and caretakers for the gardens, there are a lot of hard working volunteers helping,” she said.
“We are one of the few gardens in Australia that is mainly managed by volunteers with Tamborine Mountain Garden Club raising funds for the place.”
Ms Brushe said she hoped people would come and appreciate the work by botanical artists, council and volunteers and enjoy the gardens.
