ABOUT 4000 athletes turned out to compete in the series of punishing challenges known only too well to Spartan racers at Peak Crossing on the weekend.
Spartan Race events involve a series of obstacle races ranging from a 7km sprint to a 50km ultra where competitors race through mud, barbed wire, rope, walls and fire.
Spartan Race director Chris Heverin said racers enjoyed perfect weather and a warm reception on Saturday, April 28
“It was a fabulous event, great venue at Ivory’s Rock and the layout was challenging, which is what Spartan races are all about,” he said.
Mr Heverin said the children’s 2.5km obstacle race was popular on the day.
“We had 600 kids take part in the race and they had a lot of fun,” he said.
One of the most challenging adult races was the Beast, a 21km event with 40 obstacles, leaving racers muddy, tired and happy with their achievements.
Although the course could be completed at an individual pace, failing at any stage incurred a fine of 30 burpees, which gave racers the incentive to overcome all obstacles in their path.
Mr Heverin said the event was designed to encourage people to increase their fitness.
“It’s about getting off the couch and getting active,” he said.
“It gives you a purpose for training and staying fit.
“No matter your fitness level there is something for everyone.”
