LOGAN’S 7000-plus volunteers who work without pay to make their communities a better place to live have been honoured at a special breakfast.
Beverley Pritchard won the Frank Lenz Memorial Award for Volunteer of the Year at the Logan Loves Volunteers breakfast at Logan Sports and Convention Centre, Browns Plains, on Saturday.
Ms Pritchard, from Logan Central, has worked for 15 years with Helping Hands making refugees and migrants welcome.
She assembles furniture, cooks, cleans and teaches new arrivals how to use western utensils and helps them with medical and other appointments.
Logan SES won the Davida Steele Memorial Award for Outstanding Organisation a year after floods swept through Logan.
One person died, 200-plus properties were flooded and some communities cut off for up to six days after storms dumped more than 200mm of water over greater Jimboomba on March 31 and April 1, 2017. Logan Village, Flagstone, Cedar Creek and Bahr’s Scrub were among the worst affected areas.
The Logan Loves Volunteers breakfast turned 30 this year. About 500 people attended.
A record 16 nominations were received for Volunteer of the Year award. They included Christine Thomson of Munruben and Janice Lemon of Greenbank. Nominees worked in fields that range from making school breakfasts to comforting the homeless.
City image and innovation committee chair Laurie Smith said this year’s record field of nominees showed volunteering was alive and well in Logan.
“I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to nominate someone for an award,” said Cr Smith.
“I know there are many more out there whose efforts aren’t recognised so I urge everyone to keep an eye out for when nominations open for next year’s Logan Loves Volunteers awards.
