LOGAN Eco-Action Festival will expand as organisers strive to meet growing interest in the nine-year-old event at Griffith University Logan Campus, Meadowbrooke.
Last year’s sustainability festival, also known as LEAF, attracted record crowds. Some workshops were standing room only. This year it moves some events into a 200-seater auditorium.
“Growing numbers of environmental devotees from all over southeast Queensland, including the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Redlands and Brisbane, are looking for innovative ways to live environmentally-friendly lifestyles,” said Logan parks, animals, environment and waste committee chair councillor Jennie Breene.
LEAF’S theme this year is Rethink the Future. Guests include wildlife photographer Steve Parish and TV favourites Costa Georgiadis from Gardening Australia and Paul West from River Cottage Australia.
Local eco-businesses showcase services and offer demonstrations and workshops about topics that include cheese-making, bee-keeping, gardening, horticulture, wildlife photography, cooking, furniture upcycling and more. The active and wild zone has rock climbing, jumping castles and expressive bike classes for kids. Other highlights include food trucks and live music with a performance by Gold Coast band The Twine.
LEAF began in 2010 to inspire Logan residents and those living in surrounding areas to be conscious of their impact on the environment and to encourage an interactive relationship with the outdoors.
It will be held on Sunday May 27 from 10am to 3pm. Entry and workshops are free.
It is Logan’s celebration of World Environment Day, which falls this year on June 5.
“This is a must-do event for anyone interested in finding ways to reduce their carbon footprint,” Councillor Breene said.
