THE Commonwealth Games is the Gold Coast and SEQ’s chance to put forward a smiling face to the world. It is also a great opportunity for locals to see great athletes up close. As a ten-year-old, I was fascinated by the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games. I went with my father one day to see the athletics at QEII Stadium near Griffith University. After seeing great athletes such as Daly Thompson on the track, it was amazing to be doing the same events in Little A’s on the very same track.  As I write this, my three kids are about to enter the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre to see the gymnastics. They are also going to be able to see the athletics just as I did. I know this will be an amazing memory for them, just as it was for me. We have come a long way in Queensland since 1982.  There is no doubt that many parts of our state are better, fairer and more inclusive. For example, a child born in 1982 could expect to live to 74 years, while a child born today can expect to live to 82 years. Our opening ceremony also proudly showcased our Indigenous culture and young Indigenous people are an active part of every medal ceremony.  We can continue to see what we can do better to make Queensland a fairer place to live. I’m proud of the event we are putting on for the world and sharing with our Commonwealth family.  I’ve bought tickets and will be with my family sharing the spirit of the Games. There are tickets left in some events, I urge you not to miss out.
