YARRABILBA State School students are performing better in the classroom as a result of a weekly breakfast club.
Dunamis Church partners with Cereal for Coffee to host the breakfast club from 7.45am to 8.15am every Tuesday morning.
Nutritious meal options include cereal, toast and fruit. Parents are welcome to attend with tea and coffee available.
The breakfast club is open to students of all ages from prep to year 6.
Breakfast club coordinator and Dunamis Church member Melinda Hartley said the initiative was good for students, teachers and the community.
“One in four kids go to school hungry, so it is awesome that we can provide the program for the community,” she said.
“It is not just for the kids but the parents can come and the community is loving it.
“Teachers love it too because they can see the importance of the learning aspect, people have learning difficulties when they don’t start the day right.”
Ms Hartley runs the program with her husband Peter Hartley.
Yarrabilba State School principal Lee Harrex was proud to see a breakfast club launch on Tuesday at the n9-week-old school.
“Our kids are really valuing the free breakfast provided by local community groups and churches. We really appreciate that support,” she said.
“It is about having kids in the right mindset for learning so they don’t worry about being hungry and they have good food in their bodies.
“It is a long day if they have an early rise and don’t have breakfast until the first break and we do sometimes see students suffering with behaviour and attention to learning.”
Cr Laurie Koranski also attended the launch.
