TAMBORINE Village Lions Club president Paul Krahnen said he had sore knees from praying for the rain to stop ahead of the official cenotaph unveiling at the memorial hall on Saturday.
And his wish came true as blue skies greeted the congregation that had gathered to celebrate the momentous occasion.
The cenotaph had come about as a result of long-term combined effort from the Scenic Rim Regional Council, Tamborine Village Lions Club and Memorial Hall committee.
Queensland Governor Paul De Jersey attended the ceremony to formally unveil the cenotaph at the venue which will host its first Anzac Day ceremony this year.
“It is my privilege as governor to unveil (the cenotaph) and in so doing to acknowledge the fidelity of this community to the memory all the men and women of the Tamborine district who answered their countries call in times of conflict,” he said.
“We will remember them.”
The commemoration was also attended by the Jimboomba District Cadets, Archdeacon Valerie Hoare, Scenic Rim MP Jon Krause and Scenic Rim Deputy Mayor Nadia O’Carroll.
Cr O’Carroll said the history lived by veterans had made the dream of a cenotaph a reality.
“The concept of the cenoptath which was championed by the Tamborine Village Lions Club and supported by the local community was inspired by these remarkable stories,” she said.
