THERE is a chance of up to 200 millimetres of rain in some parts of south-east Queensland over the weekend.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman said showers, rain and isolated storms were expected from Friday until Sunday.
“People can expect 25 to 75 millimetres but that is dependent on where you are and where the storms occur,” she said.
“There is a chance of up to 200 millimetres on higher ground.”
In a severe weather warning issued for the south-east coast on Friday morning, a BOM spokesperson said Boonah, Beaudesert, Logan, Springbrook, Beenleigh, Gold Coast and Coolangatta could be affected.
A total of 75 millimetres had been observed in three hours to 9.45am at Flagstone Creek, west of Jimboomba.
Emergency services have reinforced the ‘if it’s flooded, forget it’ message.
A police spokesperson said drivers were rescued after going through flooded roads in the Wide Bay area on Thursday.
"As the rain moves further south, police are warning drivers particularly around the Sunshine Coast, Caboolture and Brisbane areas to slow down, turn their headlights on and increase their stopping distance,” the spokesperson said.
“Under severe storms or heavy rain bands, flash flooding can occur very quickly and without any notice – even on roads that you usually travel on without any issues.
“Flash flooding can cause significant structural damage to roads, so even if you think it looks safe, you can never be sure exactly what is underneath the water.”
Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said even a small amount of flood water could wash a vehicle away, putting the driver and passengers in danger.
“It also puts the people who need to rescue you at risk,” Mr Crawford said.
“Any flooded road can be deadly. People have died trying to cross flooded waterways.
“The size of your vehicle doesn’t matter, nor whether you’ve driven the road a hundred times before – If it’s flooded, forget it.”
The BOM spokeswoman said the heavy rainfall was expected mainly on the weekend with just a few isolated showers at the beginning of next week.
“On Monday we are expecting it to start clearing from the south,” she said.
