THREE Jimboomba State School students have qualified to compete at the South Coast Regional swimming championships to be held at the Miami Aquatic Centre on February 26.
This comes after Year 6 student Ryan Sutcliffe, Isabella Gonzalez (Year 5) and Zarlee Browne (Year 5) performed strongly at the Pacific District Championships at the Chandler Aquatic Centre on February 9.
The competition featured 296 primary and high school students across the south-west Logan area.
Ryan Sutcliffe secured six records in 50 metre freestyle, butterfly, breast stroke and backstroke and 100 metre freestyle and backstroke.
Zarlee Browne qualified in second place in the 50 metre freestyle and butterfly while Isabella Gonzalez performed well freestyle and backstroke.
Ryan Sutcliffe said he aspired to overtake some Queensland swimmers he had competed against in previous years.
“I hope to beat three of my rivals in the Gold Coast who are a bit faster than me or at least try and beat one,” he said.
“We are all friends at the same level but some are a little faster in some of the different strokes.”
Jimboomba State School physical education teacher Paul Ball said the students would be up against some strong competition at the South Coast championships.
“They had to come first or second to go do the Gold Coast for the South Coast Regional Championships which is a tough gig,” he said.
“The south coast has won the state championships as a team for the last 14 years.”
