A 67-YEAR-OLD Flagstone man was forced to lie under an umbrella in the heat for more than two hours after breaking his hip.
The Red Cedar Crescent resident, who does not want to named, was putting his bin out on the kerb at 10.15am when he slipped, causing the injury.
Neighbours and motorists driving past stopped to help and made multiple 000 calls before paramedics arrived at 12.45pm and took him to Logan Hospital.
Damon Koscyk said it was unacceptable for an elderly man to be waiting for medical assistance in scorching conditions for so long.
“We tried to move him but he was in too much pain,” Mr Koscyk said.
“We couldn’t give him any water or food but gave him some ice to suck on.
“Two-and-a-half hours laying in the sun under an umbrella is not good for elderly people.”
The incident sparked an angry response from residents, who called for more paramedics to be stationed at Jimboomba to account for the rising population growth.
A change.org petition, calling for additional services, was started within hours of the incident.
Flagstone resident Temyra Mcleod said allocating extra resources was just a matter of common sense.
“We need more crews,” she said.
Queensland Ambulance Service Deputy Commissioner Craig Emery said a review into the incident was under way.
“This instance has not lived up to our normal standards,” he said.
“We met up with the gentleman and apologised and he has been very understanding. We attempt in all circumstances to respond to those cases immediately.
“We sent four ambulances to him this morning which were diverted to higher priority cases but, that said, had we known all the circumstances we should have dealt with that differently.
“We don’t make any excuses.”
Deputy Commissioner Emery said the construction of a 24-hour ambulance station at Yarrabilba would improve coverage of the Jimboomba and Flagstone areas.
The man is staying overnight in Logan Hospital for observation after being treated for a fractured hip.
