AN ARTS grant is making it possible for Footlights Theatrical to perform a rock ‘n’ roll musical written by Logan-based artists in May.
The theatre group received the $8000 Regional Arts Development Funding grant to stage Billy Buckett – A Rock ‘n’ Roll Love Story at Logan Entertainment Centre.
The RADF program is a partnership between Arts Queensland and Logan City Council.
Filled with drama, pathos and a daffy British sense of humour, the production is set in 1959, small-town England, as the world was awakening to the rock ‘n’ roll music.
The original stage-musical is written by Logan-based artists Jay Turner and Cathy Mundy.
The singing and dancing family show features Steve Dorrington as Billy and Lauren Lee Innis-Youren as Jan. They are accompanied by the six-piece band The Asteroids and are sure to get audiences dancing in the aisles.
Footlights Theatrical artistic director Roslyn Johnson said she was delighted to take the show on its first professional outing.
“I can’t wait to see what new heights we can hit with this outstanding production,” she said.
Cr Steve Swenson said the RADF funding had enabled hundreds of city arts projects to go ahead.
“Logan City Council has contributed funding to the RADF program since 2001 and we have administered 40 grants rounds to date – generating both significant employment in the arts sector and enduring artworks,” he said.
In addition to the musical production, an anthology of works, the preservation of historical information and a month-long program of performances in alternative venues have received more than $31,000 in the latest round of funding.
