OVER the next 25 years, south-east Queensland is expected to grow by two million people.
Much of this growth will occur in the south-western region where the Jordan electorate resides.
For those who have lived for many years in semi-rural residential communities, the prospect of more people moving into the region can seem daunting with the inevitable question:
“Where is the plan to manage this growth?”
Since becoming the Member for Jordan in late November, I have taken the opportunity to speak with key decision makers and to review the major plans that do exist to manage the potential impacts of the population growth that we will experience.
ShapingSEQ, the most recent version of the south-east Queensland regional plan is comprehensive. It aims to deliver the supply of affordable housing, support the planning and delivery of critical infrastructure, while protecting our natural environment and lifestyle.
The Greater Flagstone Priority Development Area Scheme is an in-depth plan for our specific area that sets out key planning areas like future employment nodes, public transport and road networks, new schools and community facilities as well as greenspace including parks and biodiversity corridors.
There are also transport plans including the Salisbury to Beaudesert Rail Corridor Study and the West Mt Lindesay Highway Development Corridor Major Road Network Study.
I have taken the opportunity to be briefed on these plans, to meet with Economic Development Queensland who oversee the Greater Flagstone PDA and have also had an early meeting with the Minister for Transport and Main Roads to discuss major roads and public transport in our growing region.
I look forward to working with our community over the next few years to answer your questions about growth and how we as a Queensland Government will indeed address it.
