ABOUT 1000 people attended the Christmas-themed opening of Flagstone’s skate plaza on Saturday.
Skating elves flew high off the vert wall, while local scooters, boardriders and BMX-ers of all ages displayed their impressive skills.
The Christmas Wonderland Park Party was hosted by developers Peet Limited to mark the official opening of the second phase of Flagstone’s 10 hectare regional recreation park.
The park is being delivered in stages over the next four years at a cost of $12 million.
Councillor Trevina Schwarz said Flagstone residents had been asking for a skate park for more than four years.
“The issue we’ve had is that there hasn’t been a suitable location and new Peet have delivered amazingly,” she said.
“This is an extraordinary skate park. It is the beginning of the future of Flagstone.
“There are many great things that Peet have in their back pocket that will be coming forth soon.”
It was the first official event for newly elected Jordan MP Charis Mullen, who set off the confetti cannons marking the official opening of the skating facility.
“This is a facility that the community has really wanted and I hope the community embraces it and uses it effectively because it really is a wonderful space,” Ms Mullen said.
“As you can see it’s high quality infrastructure and it’s thoughtfully considered and developed.
“As we all know, community is more than just about bricks and mortar – it’s about the people and I’ve met some wonderful people in the Flagstone area – warm and welcoming.
“That’s what’s going to keep this community going and growing for many years to come.”
Peet development director Liz Ronson said she was pleased the skate park was open for business.
“About four years ago we went to the community and asked what they wanted in the new community and they said a skate park and somewhere for kids and young adults to meet and have fun,” she said.
“The skate park is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to our growing community and the different recreation park options we’re going to have.”
