THE state’s largest Scout group, located at Greenbank, has built a much-needed shed to accommodate its growing numbers.
The Greenbank Scout Den supplemented a $35,000 grant with $5000 of their own funds to build the shed.
A spokesperson for the group said they had obtained a land extension to accommodate the new building before applying for grants.
“This project has been four years in the making,” the spokesperson said.
“We will be able to have all our sections meet at one location instead of using other community facilities.
“We can also store all our equipment at our own facility rather than at the homes of leaders,” the spokesperson said.
The Greenbank Scout group started in 1982 and has used school buildings, buildings on army land and demountables on private land.
“We built the original den at the community centre and have been growing steadily ever since.”
The group has about 200 youth members, making it the largest in Queensland.
The spokesperson said all adults involved with the group had helped bring the building to fruition.
“A Scout group is a family or community within itself and a project of this size takes effort from all the adults involved.
“Our committee, our leaders, even former leaders have been involved over the past few years getting this project to this point.”
The spokesperson thanked Gill Hall, who was group leader when the shed project started; Wayne Plevey, the committee chairman who helped oversee the project; Tracy Bold, committee treasurer; Colleen Kutschkau, committee member; Logan City Council; Queensland Scouts and the federal MP Bert van Manen for their hard work.
