THE search for a Multiple Sclerosis cure continues this month with the inaugural Walk2Cure MS in Logan City, a fund- and awareness-raising cause that is very close to Greenbank resident Penelope Miller’s heart.
“Four people a day a diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis,” Ms Miller, who was diagnosed with MS two years ago, told the Times.
“It attacks the central nervous system – the eyes, spine and brain – over time, and depending on where lesions are in the brain/spine determines the person’s symptoms.
“Some people still end up in wheelchairs or nursing homes from this disease.
“There are current treatments that can help alter the progression of this disease and slow down the rate it progresses, however, there is an aggressive form that does not yet have any treatments at all and it can be heartbreaking to see a healthy person become totally dependant on others to even move.
“We are trying to raise awareness and of course funds for MS Queensland as they are a huge support for people with MS, including research. We need a cure.”

Support
According to Ms Miller, many participants in the Logan Walk2Cure MS event are at various stages of the disease.
“I myself look healthy, however, there are others that require mobility assistance,” she said.
“We have the support of Logan City Council which has partnered with MS Queensland to organise the walk, in particular councillor Steve Swenson.”
The type of care provided to people with MS included physiotherapy, advice, 24-hour care, and a relatively new type of accommodation controlled by computer tablet, Ms Miller said.
“We are trying to raise awareness and of course funds for MS Queensland as they are a huge support for people with MS.”
The Logan Walk2Cure MS event is a 3km or a 6km walk taking place on September 23 at Meakin Park, Slacks Creek. The event commences at 2.30pm with food trucks and entertainment, and the walk takes place from 4pm.
