Destinations are on Flagstone author Gerry Couzens’ mind, but he doesn’t need to leave his own turf.
Walking become a necessity for Mr Couzens after a health scare about four years ago and he now wants to share his health journey with as many people as possible.
Destination – Better Health allows readers to reach destinations in other states without leaving their suburb with simple tips and recording methods.
Mr Couzens was walking around his home, backyard and on a treadmill when he became bored of the scenery, or lack of, so he entered his distances into street view and concluded he could walk from Brisbane to Darwin without ever being further than two kilometres from his home.
“There was no accommodation costs and no risk of being run over by road-trains,” he said.
“The whole world can use this method, because it’s not expensive.
“It only took me four pairs of shoes to get Darwin.”
Mr Couzens said he understands how daunting it can be when a doctor tells you to start exercising.
“After 12 months so many things had improved,” he said.
“My medication is now one third of what it used to be and my bone density has improved.
“This challenge that I’ve given myself is not just for seniors.”
Destination – Better Health took Mr Couzens about three months to write and he hopes his efforts motivate others to start or continue their own regular exercise regime.
