One of Australia’s largest supermarket chains, Coles, has committed to the future of Flagstone.
The grocery mart giant has purchased a 1.8 hectare lot from Peet Flagstone City Pty Ltd, with plans to anchor an outlet in the heart of Queensland’s newest satellite city.
The $6.7 billion Flagstone development – a joint venture between national residential land specialists Peet Limited and industry superannuation giant MTAA Super – is set to deliver 10,000 new jobs and an additional 12,000 homes to the area over the next 25 years.
Once complete, Greater Flagstone will have a projected population of around 150,000 people.
Coles state manager of property Andrew Zeller said he was excited “to develop a new shopping centre at Flagstone”.
“(It’s) convenient for local residents and meets the needs of this growing community,” he said.
The food outlet will be positioned at the entrance to Flagstone’s central business district, on a new extension of Homestead Drive.
Mr Zeller confirmed the facility will also feature the latest store design concepts and one level on-grade car park.
Bluebird Early Education Centre manager Kylie Mills said she was thrilled to hear the supermarket giant picked up the first commercial development site in the Flagstone satellite city project.
“At the moment, we’re very remote and have to travel to Browns Plains, Springfield or even Jimboomba to access services or pick up items for the centre at times,” she said.
“It’s going to be very nice having everything we need nearby, so we can just pop down the road if we ever run low of groceries.
“It’s going to be a lot more convenient.”
Already, with the development of Flagstone on the horizon, Ms Mills said she has seen an influx of childminding enquires from families, who have moved or are planning to move to the area.
“The centre currently sits at about 80 per cent occupancy and we’re always keeping our eyes open, especially when construction starts on this major development, to see where the demand lies,” she said.
“We are a 100 place centre and have an additional room to use, to expand our service, so we can grow as the region expands.”
Coles was yet to release a start date for the construction of the company’s new shopping centre at Flagstone, according to a representative of Peet Limited.
