WOODHILL State School pupils have received a special lesson on road safety with a visit from Woodhill’s newest motorcycle police.
The police officers visited the school with their 300kg motorcyles to deliver important road safety messages.
The visit was part of an intensive three-week course that officers must complete in order to join the motorcycle team.
Woodhill State School head of curriculum Jann Higgins said the lesson drove home some key road safety messages.
The children particularly enjoyed trying out the bikes for themselves and the “watermelon” demonstration, she said.
“Officers reminded students to stop, look and listen, wear their helmets and seat belts, and be calm in the car so their parents could focus on driving and bus safety,” she said.
“Woodhill’s staff and students enjoyed the visit immensely and wish all the ‘trainees’ good luck for their graduation.”
Sergeant Steve Fisher, Senior Constable Marty Hogan and Senior Constable Lee Gibson facilitated the course which moves from slow speed manoeuvring and motorcycle control to high speed and urgent duty riding, and finally road and off-road riding in various conditions.
The training also includes formation, motorcade and professional riding, as well as community engagement.
“It’s a tough course with high stress in a high pressure environment,” principal facilitator Senior Constable Marty Hogan said.
“The seven police officers who completed this course have worked as a solid team. They will go on to great careers and continue to grow their capabilities.”
The officers also visited C&K Woodhill Kindergarten.
