THE nightmare Mt Lindesay Highway has missed out on federal budget funding as has the Pacific and Gateway motorways merge, which causes Gold Coast-bound traffic to grind to a halt.
The merge also impacts on drivers heading southwest for the Mt Lindesay Highway.
While some key infrastructure projects missed out in the federal budget, the federal and state governments have agreed on two key road projects.
The government will spend $200 million on the Ipswich Motorway upgrade between Rocklea and Darra, a project for which Opposition Leader Bill Shorten also has promised funding.
Almost $600,000 also has been allocated to upgrade two exits through the government’s black spot program.
Forde MP Bert van Manen said Exit 38 at Yatala and Exit 41 at Ormeau often faced dangerous queuing during peak hour.
This caused the M1 to back up, producing dangerous situations for commuters.
“I have spoken to residents and businesses around Ormeau and Yatala and they all identified exits 38 and 41 as problem areas,” Mr van Manen said.
“... Exit 38 on the Pacific Motorway to Stapylton Jacobs Well Road will receive Federal funding of $346,000 for safety improvements.
“Safety on Exit 41 of the Pacific Motorway to Computer Road at Ormeau will also receive funding of $252,000 for imperative safety improvements.”
Mr van Manen said the black sport program was about targeting dangerous sections of local roads.
“There have been too many near misses and dangerous queuing on the M1 around these exits,'' he said.
Work will start later this year.
Although the Mt Lindesay Highway is a state road, Logan mayor Luke Smith – when campaigning during the March local government election – called on the federal and state governments to work out a way to fix the road.
Beaudesert MP Jon Krause also has attacked the state government over the lack of funding for the highway.
