Senior students from Flagstone Community College got a dose of inspiration on Thursday from Basketball legend and motivational speaker Eric Bailey.
Mr Bailey was brought to the school by QT Mutual Bank and has given his talks across the globe spoke with the students about his path of overcoming a youth full of adversity to playing college and professional basketball.
The former Portland Trail Blazer, Hobart Devil and Melbourne Tigers player who recently released a book, said he tries to give teenagers another voice of encouragement.
“For me when I was growing in high school or even in primary school there wasn’t a voice, there wasn’t someone outside my family who genuinely cared about my future and to be able to get out of my situation, because I actually met someone who took an interest in me I always thought that if I ever got to a position where I had an opportunity to have a voice and to reach out and to help other people, if I could that’s what I would do.” he said.
Mr Bailey said when speaking with the younger generation he seeks to remind them of what’s possible through hard work.
“When I’m coming and speaking to students it’s all about letting them know that hey your future is out there, don’t be limited by what you see right now it's all about what you can get to,” he said
“When I’m with high school kids it’s all about being real, it’s all about talking about your own experiences, its all about just talking about what you did to get your out of situation that maybe there in right now, you can lay your emotions and your hearts on the table, these kids that I’m talking to right now they can feel it, they understand it and tey know what I’m talking about and I just resonate with them.”
