THERE’S a new army moving into the Canungra Creek area but it has nothing to do with the district’s Kokoda Barracks.
The Federal Government’s Green Army will plant about 5000 trees along the creek next month as part of the national 20 Million Trees program.
It is one of three Scenic Rim projects to share in $170,000 of federal funding, with $88,440 for Back Creek at Beechmont and $37,510 for Il Bogan Park at Beaudesert.
Wright MP Scott Buchholz said the funding helped not only the environment but the lives of Green Army workers.
“Seeing the progress of Green Army participants during the last project at Canungra, seeing their feeling of worth grow and seeing them learn valuable skills on the job – showed me just how much of a difference can be made,” he said.
Scenic Rim Mayor John Brent said Green Army workers were enthusiastic, with the program providing hands-on experience for youth while helping the environment.
