FORMER Hills College student Jason Day has risen to claim the world number one ranking in golf.
He became world number one after winning for the fourth time in six starts at the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in Illinois on Monday.
The win made Day, 27, the youngest Australian to rise to world number one in golf, with Greg Norman taking the top spot as a 31-year-old and Adam Scott as a 33-year-old.
Day, Norman and Scott are the only Australians to have reached the world number one.
Day replaced Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy in the top spot, with USA golfers Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler sitting at third, fourth and fifth.
Day’s rise to world number one came after the elation of securing his first win at a major when he won the US PGA Championship with a score of 20-under par in Wisconsin on August 17.
Day, who was born and bred in Beaudesert, honed his skills in golf at The Kooralbyn International School and Hills College at Jimboomba.
He was ambitious from the start, setting his sights on the PGA tour before he graduated high school in 2004.
Once he made his PGA tour debut in 2006, Day’s ambitions grew and, once he had the US PGA Championship under his belt, the world number one ranking beckoned.
On social media Day expressed his elation at rising to world number one.
“How sweet it is. Thank you everyone @BMWchamps & also my entire team. #WorldNo1 Been an amazing ride! Onward to more,” he wrote on Twitter on Monday morning.
Day will now head to the PGA Tour Championship in Atlanta from September 24 to September 27.
