Almost half of Queensland voters would be unwilling to support their preferred candidate in the upcoming election if they wanted accessing an abortion to remain a criminal offence.
Abortion is the only medical procedure to feature in the Queensland Criminal Code.
A ReachTEL poll revealed LNP voters were the most likely to support their preferred candidate if the candidate wanted abortion to remain a crime, with 62.1 per cent agreeing, compared with 42.5 per cent of Labor voters, 20.9 per cent Greens and 59.7 per cent One Nation.
Overall, 50.1 per cent of respondents said they would not vote for their preferred candidate if that candidate wanted access to abortion to remain a criminal offence.
The poll of 1255 Queenslanders, commissioned by women's campaigning group Fair Agenda, showed more than two thirds of voters thought decriminalising abortion was "very important" or "somewhat important" when deciding how to cast their vote.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk avoided the question when asked how important it was to her for abortion to be removed from the Criminal Code.
"During this term of government, I have sent that to the Law Reform Commission to have a look at, which is the right thing to do, and we will await the outcome of that," she said.
"I'm going through the processes and I believe it is very important to look at the results of that Law Reform Commission report."
Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls said the LNP believed there should be no change to the current laws.
One Nation state leader Steve Dickson said the party was not looking to make any changes to the current legislation.
On the question of whether One Nation would allow its members to have a conscience vote on the issue, Mr Dickson said it was too soon to make that decision.
"At this point in time we have to wait and see how many MPs we'll get into Parliament," he said.
"Where we sit at the moment is, party policy is we're not changing any of the existing legislation that's in place as far as abortion."
An earlier Essential Research poll of 1201 Queenslanders from February revealed 78 per cent of One Nation voters agreed it should be legal for a woman to decide to terminate her pregnancy.
Fair Agenda executive director Renee Carr said the current laws were hurting women and voters wanted to see change.
"This polling shows they're also willing to vote for it," she said.
"Polling shows support among voters for decriminalising abortion across the political spectrum - it's time for a change in the law.
"The current, archaic abortion laws are particularly hurting rural women - who face huge geographic and financial barriers to accessing the reproductive healthcare they need."
In February 2017, independent member for Cairns Rob Pyne withdrew his two abortion bills, which prompted the government to refer the issue to the Law Reform Commission.
The Commission was asked to investigate the issue of modernising the state's laws relating to the termination of pregnancy, with its final report due by June 30, 2018, and prepare draft legislation, meaning the next Parliament will have to deal with the proposed bill.
Labor had promised its MPs a conscience vote, and the introduction of a bill in the next term.
The LNP had confirmed it would not support either of Mr Pyne's bills, despite allowing a conscience vote, meaning they were doomed to fail.
Greens candidate for South Brisbane Amy MacMahon said that if elected, she would introduce a bill to decriminalise abortion within the first 100 days, with Katter's Australian Party MP Robbie Katter saying he was strongly opposed to any changes.
So far, 147 candidates have taken Fair Agenda's pro-choice pledge, while four said they would vote to maintain the the current laws.
