A PETITION calling on the state government to urgently develop a plan to reduce traffic congestion through Logan Village is set to be tabled in Parliament on Thursday.
The petition has more than 1500 signatures.
Councillor Laurie Koranski and five residents had appealed for a meeting with Transport Minister Mark Bailey or senior departmental officials after the tabling.
Cr Koranski said the area was one of the fastest growing in the state.
“The region is haemorrhaging under the growth,” she said.
“There have been a number of serious accidents and deaths on the road.
“This is as much a safety issue as one about traffic congestion.”
Buccan resident Paul Casbolt said residents wanted to talk to officials about a transport plan to address congestion on Waterford-Tamborine Road.
Mr Casbolt said although works were being carried out on part of the thoroughfare, there needed to be an overall plan for roads, including public transport and safe access for pedestrians and cyclists.
“There are 5000 people in Yarrabilba now and they expect 50,000 eventually,” he said.
“The current approach is just a band-aid approach.”
Mr Casbolt said the intersection at Anzac Avenue was dangerous for motorists turning right onto Waterford-Tamborine Road.
In September an 81-year-old man died from injuries he suffered in a crash at the intersection on August 29.
Mr Casbolt said much of the congestion resulted from the state government approving high growth communities, with little work done on associated infrastructure.
“If there had been proper planning, we would not be suffering the problems we have to such a great extent,” he said.
“It is unfair to the existing residents and those who are moving here.
“It is giving the area a bad name and it is not deserved,” he said.
Mr Casbolt said a council plan for Logan Village contained good ideas but more needed to be done.
“A lot of effort has been put into it but the plan has not really been implemented.”
He said residents also had good ideas about improvements but were not consulted by government.
“The only consultation has been telling people on Waterford-Tamborine Road what works are going to be done.
“Transport and Main Roads are missing out on understanding the community issues and hearing the great ideas,” he said.
“I see the planning process as very important.”
Logan MP Linus Power said he supported the efforts.
“I will continue to fight for more funding for Waterford-Tamborine Road,” he said.
