Two local netballers have been chosen for the Queensland Under 16s Indoor Netball squad.
The squad is broken up into two teams and shadow players will represent if another player is injured or cannot take the court.
Buccan’s Sarah Bristol, 16, will play in the B side while Jimboomba’s Abby Leighton, 16, has been selected as a shadow player.
Both girls have played netball together previously.
Bristol said she had been extremely excited to be selected in the team after taking part in a trial weekend.
“I have played in the competition before, but not for a few years,” she said.
“So I didn’t even know if I would get through.”
Bristol said she would play goal attack.
Leighton said she had played in the competition during 2012.
“Usually I just do indoor carnivals because I like playing outdoor more,” she said.
“I was really stoked to be selected and also to potentially play with Sarah.”
Leighton said she would most likely play in wing positions but it would depend on where she would need to fill in.
Each team will compete at the end of November in the week-long Junior Nationals Competition.
The teams will also play both 6 and 7 per side styles of indoor netball.
Bristol said she was still trying to learn the six a side game.
“I prefer playing sevens as I am more used to it,” she said.
“But the sixes is really fun to play.
“I am now playing at Springwood to get a bit more practice in the indoor space.”
The girls train each Sunday for more than two hours.
Each week training location changes to accommodate for all the girls who were selected from across the south-east region.
Bristol said she also trained herself at home and ran during the week.
“I’m really hoping that I can become fitter and play better in all my netball by being in this team,” she said.
Leighton said she alternated each week between teams for training to get a feel for how each person plays.
“I really want to learn new netball skills and build on my existing skills,” she said.
“I really like playing for both teams because it changes it up.”
Bristol said it was too early to tell what her teams strengths and weaknesses were.
“We are really still all trying to get to know each other and how they all play,” she said.
