Jimboomba is lucky enough to host two rounds of the Australian Supercross Championships this year, and if round six is anything like Saturday night’s first round, it will be yet another resounding success.
Thousands of people flocked to Jimboomba X Stadium on the grounds of Hills International College for round one of the Australian Supercross and were treated to a feast of high octane action.
The main two categories were won by some familiar names with American Justin Brayton retaining the SX1 450cc class title he won at the same venue in 2016, while in the SX2 class last year’s winner Gavin Faith was pipped by Hayden Mellross with Mitch Evans rounding out the placings in third.
Both riders gave themselves the perfect start to the six round championship and put themselves in the frame to win their respective class championship when the supercross returns for its final round at Jimboomba on November 18.
Logan Village product Dan Reardon was hopeful of lifting the SX1 winner’s trophy he won in 2015, but had to settle for third behind Dean Ferris in second and Brayton who was the fastest man on two wheels throughout the event.
Mellross said he was thrilled to have gone one better at Jimboomba X Stadium after Faith beat him across the line in 2016.
“It’s great, last year here in Jimboomba I got second and came runner-up to Gav,” he said.
“This year to be able to work on my faults and just execute my plan was unreal.
“To come out on the top step of the podium one better than last year is just a huge boost of confidence for me and I’m ready to keep this championship going.”
Brayton said he was pleased to have got his championship hopes off to the perfect start in round one.
“That one felt good, I had a pretty good gap at the end,” he said.
“I had a great start in the final, but I let some guys sneak around the outside of me on the first turn.
“I felt good all day. I’m a lot more prepared this year, so hopefully I can keep this going.
“I’m looking forward to this break to get in some consistent riding and get to hang out with my family and enjoy Australia.
“I’m looking forward to the rest of the season – these guys are going to be tough.”
