SCENIC Rim and Logan athletes received a Local Sporting Champions grant to pursue their sporting dreams.
A $500 grant was handed to 20 athletes towards costs involved in their sporting career.
Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz presented the youths with an award.
The grant winners were Jasmine Barry, Bray Bowden, Jayden Crighton, Jacob Cutler, Kya Foxwell, Chelsea Gatti, Megan Jones, Eithen Leard, Cruz Lemming, Harrison Leonard, Sebastian Millard, Camryn Newton-Smith, Rieanna Noga, Mollie O’Callaghan, Sophie O’Callaghan, Daniel Ost, Hugh Pfitzner, Jacob Reid, Sarah Thorpe and Sam Windsor.
Mr Buchholz praised the athletes for their sporting successes by deeming them “sporting stars in the making”.
“They are an inspiration for other local aspiring sporting champs and a shining example of the calibre of sporting talent in our region,” he said.
Mr Buchholz said the grant would assist the young sportsmen and sportswomen to cover the costs when competing at championships.
Miss Thorpe’s mother Rhonda said she was grateful her daughter’s shot put and hammer throwing abilities were recognised.
“Without a grant, it means we have to save more money to get Sarah interstate or overseas to compete in the first place,” she said.
Ms Thorpe said registrations alone could cost hundreds of dollars to allow an athlete to compete.
“This grant gives us a bit of relief financially and Sarah can continue to compete,” she said.
