Is your family ready for bushfire season?
It doesn’t seem that long ago that water was almost lapping at the fire danger level sign outside of Jimboomba. However, now just months later, everything is dry and because of the flood there is a lot of fuel on the ground from the wet weather.
The combination of fuel load and an extended period of dry weather only needs to be combined with a hot day and some wind to create an extremely dangerous fire situation. We had this combination last Thursday when the Fire Brigade declared a total fire ban in Logan. On days like this it is illegal to start a fire in the open and extreme care should be taken.
To be prepared every Logan resident should be ready with a bushfire survival plan for their house and family. To get more information visit ruralfire.qld.gov.au and get prepared.
Skilling Young Queenslanders for Work
The Skilling Young Queenslanders for Work program continues to give skills to young job seekers and provide facilities for local clubs and schools. Recently I joined the graduates of the Your Town program at the Greenbank Pony Club where the participants had built new yards and fences, rebuilt a shed, and built a paved viewing area and guard rail.
Peter the trainer from Your Town at one point pulled all the participants off the job they were looking at and asked them what was wrong with it. They suggested ideas but couldn’t work it out. Finally Peter said “there is nothing wrong with it - you need to have the confidence to say so when you have done a good job.” That confidence is just one of the lessons the participants learnt through the program. They should be extremely proud of what they have achieved.
The Skilling Queenslanders for work continues to get a strong return on investment in young people with many of them transitioning to work through the program. Any other clubs who have similar projects to do such as the Greenbank Pony Club should contact my office at logan@parlaiment.qld.gov.au.
