Six Logan City councillors have pledged their public support for the yes campaign for marriage equality.
A statement was issued on behalf of councillors Laurie Koranski, Lisa Bradley, Russell Lutton, Stacey McIntosh, Jon Raven and Darren Power on September 19.
The statement said these councillors encouraged Logan residents to respond to the (marriage equality) survey and consider voting yes.
“The City of Logan is home to 217 different cultures, many alternative beliefs, religions and customs living in harmony,” the statement read.
“Our city is successful because we offer a diversity of lifestyles and opportunities irrespective of your income, age, race, gender, beliefs or sexuality.
“This variety makes our city a great place to live by encouraging equality, acceptance and tolerance towards others.
“Twenty-five countries around the world have recognised marriage equality, and more than forty councils around Australia have declared their support, including Brisbane City Council.
“Council should not have to be involved in this process, and we would much rather the Federal Parliament have the courage to vote on this matter themselves, as they were elected to do.
“One thing our community cannot tolerate is discrimination.
“All people must be equal under the law.
“Currently the Marriage Act discriminates against people of the same gender who wish to get married, and it’s time for that to change.”
Residents of Logan have started to receive their ballot papers in the mail.
