Hills International College students are set for a new outlook on learning with their $1.87 million primary and music block being officially opened.
The project has doubled the primary learning spaces and allows a whole floor to be dedicated to performance and music.
A special opening ceremony and tour was held on September 15 with guests including Member for Logan Linus Power, Hills Educational Foundation CEO Joe Marinov and Division 11 Councillor Trevina Schwarz.
Mr Power said the state governments capital assistance scheme provided $500,000 for the build and the rest of the $1.37 million was raised by the Hills Educational Foundation.
Mr Marinov said the purpose was to create a functional learning space, with indoor and outdoor learning environments.
“We wanted something that demonstrated history and continuity through mixing gothic and Queenslander elements,” he said.
Principal Kevin Lynch said the children had loved the tour of the new rooms.
“They always show great excitement for new learning facilities,” he said.
“The gargoyle has certainly been a bit of a talking point and the music students are ecstatic to have new spaces to practice, as the acoustics are incredible on the top floor.
“At the end of the day it’s the quality of the learning and teaching that takes place inside, but with a brand new resource there’s a greater degree of people feeling they are making a real commitment to education because they feel the facilities are reflective of 21st century standards.”
Cr Schwarz said the building was like something you would see in the movies, particularly Harry Potter.
“When you have a look, you tell me which student would not want to say ‘I’m a student of Hills International College’,” she said.
Students are set to move into the classrooms next term.
A science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics building will be the next learning space upgrade for the college.
