Becky’s Place owner Doreen Gagel hosted a book party on September 7 to show the calming nature of horses.
Ms Gagel said the party was organised to raise awareness of the local service that is available in Stockleigh for families with children on the autism spectrum or with disabilities.
Councillor Laurie Koranski visited the morning and read the children ‘I’m a dirty dinosaur’ as part of the book buddies program.
“I’m really passionate about getting children reading and really want to inspire children,” she said.
“It’s really great to be up close and personal with the horses too.”
Ms Gagel said she started opening the property to visitors after dealing with her own anxiety issues.
“I found that being around horses had so many calming properties,” she said.
“People can book in to come and see me and the horses and have their own calming time here.
“I have children who come along with disabilities and different needs.
“They are completely different people when they are just at home and I get to see this wonderful side of them out here with the horses.
“Here with the horses they can be calm, learn fine motor skills and learn how to care for someone else.”
Ms Gagel also welcomes the first five together readers on a Tuesday morning each week.
“I love being able to learn about the children’s development through the Logan Together initiative,” she said.
Becky, the namesake of Becky’s Place, is a miniature appaloosa, who loves helping children along with the other miniature horses on the property.
