CANTERBURY College has won a one-off STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) teaching innovation award at an international Adolescent Success teaching and learning conference in Brisbane.
Adolescent Success Inc is a not-for-profit association for teachers, schools, businesses and other educators who care about young adolescents and education in the middle years.
The award was announced at the 10th international conference for Adolescent Success held at the Brisbane Convention Centre last week.
The Adolescent Success awards celebrate schools and teachers who demonstrate exemplary middle schooling practice, and in 2017 a special award was generated for Canterbury College.
“We had applied for the Award 5 category of STEM in middle years,” a college spokesperson told the Times this week.
“But the judges created a once-off exemplary award for us, for STEM excellence across the whole college.”
STEM in action
Head of college Donna Anderson attended the ceremony.
“This award is such a wonderful achievement, it truly reflects the hard work and future focused thinking that is driving us forward at Canterbury College,” she said.
According to Reina Mesina, STEM coordinator years 7-12, Canterbury College provides an amazing setting for students to learn innovative STEM in curriculum and beyond.
“We also provide a diverse range of extension programs, exciting extra-curricular and professional links,” she said.
“Canterbury College has a whole-school approach to support students grow and be better prepared for their STEM driven future. These wonderful opportunities for our students are facilitated by passionate, dedicated staff and dynamic future thinking leaders. I’m blessed to be working alongside such awesome people.”
According to the judges, Canterbury College best demonstrated through research and anecdotal evidence how their STEM program had a positive influence on young adolescent learners and how the program supports best practice in the middle years.
As part of the conference, delegates observed STEM excellence in action at a shortlist of highly respected Brisbane schools, including Canterbury College.
A showcase of Canterbury College’s award-winning STEM will be a feature at the College’s Open Day on Saturday, October 14 from 11am-1pm.
