RESIDENTS and councillors across two local government regions welcomed the reopening of the Alan Wilke Bridge at Wolffdene on Friday, August 18, after it was out of action for almost five months.
The Stanmore Crossing bridge was closed to allow for extensive repair work following the devastating impacts of ex-tropical Cyclone Debbie, and required a joint-council effort to reopen.
According to Logan City division 4 councillor Laurie Koranski, the reopening of the bridge will be welcome news for local residents and commuters.
The impact of the bridge closure was felt by commuters as far afield as Jimboomba, Yarrabilba and Logan Village, she said.
Meanwhile, residents in Windaroo, Mount Warren and Beenleigh were forced to endure large volumes of traffic and heavy vehicles snarling through suburban streets.
“This news will come as a welcome relief to many,” Cr Koranski said.
“The closure of the bridge has been a source of frustration for commuters, turned our local streets into main roads and has hampered local businesses.
“Our schools also suffered, with children at times arriving late to classes as their parents and school buses ran the gauntlet through heavy traffic.
“I’d like to extend a huge thank you to our incredibly resilient community for their patience during this challenging time,” she said.
