Winx might have been spectacular in her heart-stopping return to racing in the Saturday's Warwick Stakes, but the signs indicate that her best is yet to come.
The world's best turf horse's 18th consecutive win was anything but routine, as she missed the start by five lengths and had to chase for all the Randwick 1400m. However trainer Chris Waller said she has never recovered better from a first-up run in her career, where her time rating was the equal to the same race last year.
"I saw her straight after the race, she was very relaxed," Waller said on Melbourne radio.
"Normally she'd get on her toes and sweat up quite a bit, to the point where I don't let them put the sponsor's rug on the horse, because she's just too hot - but [Saturday] she was fine.
"I saw her 20 minutes after the race, and deadset, you wouldn't have known she'd have gone around, in terms of blowing, and still nice and charged up.
"I think she's had a pretty good prep, and lucky we went through what we did, because otherwise it would've been a taxing run ... the two trials, the endless amount of work she did going into the race helped her overcome a problem."
Winx headed to the beach at the airport on Sunday morning with Foxplay once again by her side, as is her regular recovery after racing, and walked laps for about 20 minutes.
Waller plans to have Winx back at Randwick in a fortnight for the Chelmsford Stakes as he plots a course to a third Cox Plate in October.
Last year she missed the Chelmsford and went straight to the George Main Stakes but Waller feels she might need another run this time around.
"I'll probably stay on top of her and run her in two weeks' time, because you don't want to start missing runs and all of a sudden there's a problem in the barriers and you have to trial and things like that," Waller said. "I put yesterday's [slow start] down to being a bit fresh.
"I'd like to see her run in two weeks' time - the Chelmsford's on at that time, and it would seem logical to run her there, but we won't leave the program unturned.
"We'll have a look at all options to make sure anything's possible.
"It's just one run at a time, and we want her in the Cox Plate in the best possible condition and the right outcome at the end."
Winx produced the charge the likes has not been seen at Randwick to keep her winning run intact. Daily Sectionals' Vince Accardi clocked her final 600m in 31.98 seconds as she ran down Foxplay, yet jockey Hugh Bowman only had to slap her with the whip twice.
"It is one of the fastest last 600m sectionals we have on record at Randwick - if not the fastest - but the wind behind certainly played its role," Accardi said.
"It was faster than Black Caviar ever went there but when you adjust it for the wind, she is still a length or two off Black Caviar's best.
"The rating for the win was actually pretty similar to last year's Warwick Stakes adjusted. So You Think actually still has a better 1400m rating at Randwick because of the way the race was run.
"They actually went quite slow early about 13 lengths below benchmark, but it was amazing what she did because they surged mid-race and she just held that top speed for so long.
"I can't remember a horse that held that speed for so long."
