Jimboomba Little Athletics took receipt of its new pole vault facility last week just in time for the start of the new athletics season.
The club’s old pole vault pit was totally submerged and destroyed during the floods earlier in the year and vaulters have been training at the Queensland Athletics Centre at Nathan waiting for their new mats to arrive.
Local athletes christened the new facility at the club’s Henderson Road headquarters on Sunday with Queensland champion Maddison Aitkin the first athlete to fly over the bar.
Pole vault is not a recognised Little Athletics event but athletes as young as 12 can compete in pole vault competitions and championships conducted by Athletics Australia and Queensland Athletics. Jimboomba has produced a number of state and national pole vault medallists since the club started providing specialised training about eight years ago.
Jimboomba Little Athletics will be holding its first club sign on this Friday August 18 between 5:50pm and 7:30pm, with a second sign on being held a week later before competition commences in September.
During its weekly competition, athletes aged from five years to 19 years will take part in a range of track and field events including sprints, hurdles and middle distance races as well as jumping and throwing events including the popular javelin throw.
