Jimboomba Redbacks under 13s finished their season on a high, winning 106 to 1 over Wynnum on the weekend.
The team went into this game quietly confident even though it has been a while since their last victory. The team came early to Wynnum and were presented with certificates to acknowledge them as the first players to play in the under 13s girls team.
On what was a very hot day, the under 13s marked, tackled and shared the ball with strength and courage.
The girls came flying out the box in the first quarter kicking inaccurately with a score of two goals and eight behinds to nil.
They kicked straighter in the second term kicking four goals and three behinds.
When the ball went into the Redbacks’ defensive half, the girls were able to bring it back out and score. At the half-time break, the score was 6-11-47 to nil.
The Redbacks went on to kick eight goals and five behinds in the second half to one behind, with the final score of 106 to 1 point.
Goal kickers were: Mikayla Nurse (3), Teagan Dare (2), Ashleigh Hodges (2,) Grace Parkinson (2), with singles to Summer Balmforth, Tej Sandhu-Gilmore, Kayla Whittaker and Ayva Stamatopoulos.
Best players were Teagan Dare, Mikayla Nurse and Ila Streeter.
After starting the season with just six players, the under 13s Redbacks finished with a full team of 16 players.
Summer Balmforth and Grace Parkinson will be missed when they join the 15s team next year.
The summer skills sessions start in November and the club looks forward to all existing players returning and new players joining.
Under 15s
This week the under 15 girls played in a top-of-the-table clash against Calamvale, going down by a single point 26-27.
Despite the loss, the Redbacks have finished the home and away season at the top of the ladder as minor premiers.
Having played Calamvale three times this season, one team or the other has been under strength, and the real test comes in two weeks as they both face off against each other in a semi-final for a place in the grand final on Sunday September 10.
Starting slow the Redbacks found momentum as the game went on, kicking two goals in the first four minutes of the last quarter to get within one point.
Highlights included Hayley Milne running the ball out of the back line several times and driving it forward.
KJ Shiner had a great second half in the ruck and Aliesha Alford stood strong in defence and kept the ball moving back out to the forwards.
