AFL legend Kevin Sheedy headed to Park Ridge last week to inspire local players and their guests at a fundraising dinner.
About 80 Park Ridge Pirates players and guests joined in on the evening at the Park Ridge Tavern.
Each quarter the Pirates aim to host one evening with a guest speaker, not only to raise funds for their club, but to boost morale in their players.
President Andy Colenso said having Mr Sheedy come to their event was fantastic.
“He just gave so much time to us,” he said.
“He had a few stints up the front talking, but he also took photos with our guys and made sure he spoke to everyone.”
Mr Colenso said Mr Sheedy spoke about his recent 50 years in football celebrations as well as his life and coaching experiences throughout those years.
“It has really opened the boys eyes up, that yes there is money in the game, but even then it is just a game of footy,” he said.
“We have got to take it back down to the basics and enjoy the game we are all here to play.
“It was just such a good conversation to have with the club.”
Mr Colenso said he hoped to be able to get the club’s name more widely recognised by hosting guest speaking events.
“It’s not just the club, it’s about the community,” he said.
“We really want to get that community spirit into our club because it’s not all about the money.
“By going down this avenue it’s just one more way to expose the club to more people who might want to get involved.”
